ENCOURAGING SIGN

Ideally, I wish there were no need for groups and concert spaces that specialize in contemporary music.  I wish that all orchestras, ensembles and opera companies just naturally included lots of new works in their offerings.  That said, George Steel, the impresario of the Miller Theater at Columbia University, has turned the place into a hotbed of contemporary music.  He has shown a knack for drawing young audiences to concerts like the Ensemble Sospeso's evening of works by the Dutch composer Louis Andriessen.  It would be nice if our major institutions were similarly interested in new music.  Maybe Mr. Steel's success will embolden them.
