performance

In the age of Napster, MP3s, and headphones, we need to remind ourselves that the excitement and theatricality of live performance is an essential part of music. The musicians of Sospeso are virtuoso soloists drawn from some thirteen different countries, including Iran, India, Venezuela, Romania, Korea, Hungary, Japan, and Estonia, as well as the US and Western Europe—a diverse group befitting a diverse city.

In programming recent and provocative concert music, Sospeso crosses paths with a host of writers, filmmakers, and other cultural figures—some in the context of active collaboration, some figures from the distant past or distant lands whose voices speak directly to a composer or a musician.

Sospeso gives the American premiere of Pilgrimage, the multimedia collaboration between Sir John Tavener and filmmaker Werner Herzog, under conductor Rand Steiger
