Taimur Sullivan is a concert saxophonist and member of the PRISM Quartet. He has been
described as “…not only dedicated and skilled, but also talented, fearless and sensitive,”
(Tom Strini, Milwaukee
Journal-Sentinel) and, of his New York debut recital, as
“…commanding…” “Mr. Sullivan delivered this…wide-ranging program with a seductive
breadth of tone and considerable technical agility” (Alex Ross,
The New York Times). He
has performed throughout ten countries and with orchestras in Michigan, Georgia and
Colorado, and has been the first prize winner in four national competitions including the
North American Saxophone Alliance Competition. Recently, Mr. Sullivan was presented in
recital at King’s College London, and was selected as one of ten international finalists for the
Pro Musicis Award.
Mr. Sullivan is regularly featured as a recitalist, orchestral soloist and chamber musician, with
recent solo performances at Lincoln Center and at the Sonic Boom Festival in New York,
and the Music Paradise ‘98 and EarMarks ‘99 festivals in Germany. An active proponent of
the performance of modern music, Mr. Sullivan has been a featured artist at music festivals
internationally, including guest performances at venues sponsored by Ensemble 21,
Washington Square Contemporary Music Society, Composers Concordance, the Society of
Composers Inc., and others. In the past six years he has premiered over 35 works by
composers including Gerhard Stäbler, Alvin Lucier, Jeff Nichols,
Olga
Neuwirth, Gunther
Schuller, Larry Polansky, John Harbison, Jason Eckardt, Keith Moore, and Ross Feller, and
actively promotes and commissions works by emerging composers. He has given
lecture/performances on modern music and contemporary saxophone technique at the
King’s College London, Manhattan School of Music, Columbia University, the Curtis
Institute, and New York University, and was recently awarded a Young Professionals Grant
from the Yvar Mikhashoff Trust for New Music. Upcoming projects include the premieres
of new works by James Clarke, Keith Moore and Michael Hamman, and a performances of
Franco Donatoni’s concertino
HOT with the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne.
With the PRISM Quartet, Mr. Sullivan gives recitals and master classes in the United States
and abroad. Highlights of past seasons include a five-week tour of Latin America where he
performed in Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Ecuador and Guatemala, performance of Samuel
Adler’s Concerto, an on-going residency in Philadelphia, and recitals throughout the United
States. Upcoming projects include the premiere performances of William Bolcom’s
Concerto Grosso with the Detroit & Dallas Symphony Orchestras, among others, and two
new recordings: saxophone works of William Albright, and Real Standard Time, a recording
of jazz compositions.
As a jazz saxophonist, Mr. Sullivan was the recipient of an “Outstanding Soloist Award” at
the Notre Dame Jazz Festival. He has toured extensively throughout the Soviet Union,
performing concerts in Moscow, Leningrad, Kiev, Donetsk and Sochi, and he has also
performed behind the Platters, the Drifters, Louis Bellison, Cecil Bridgewater, Bunky Green
and Jimmy Heath.
Mr. Sullivan has studied at the University of Illinois and Michigan State University with
James Forger, Joseph Lulloff and Debra Richtmeyer, and has served on the faculty at the
University of Bridgeport. He can be heard on the Capstone, Innova, Mastersound, Bonk
and Zuma Record labels, and has upcoming recordings on CRI and Mode. He resides in
New York City, where he is the co-director of the ThreeTwo Festival of New Music.
