Darius Kauffman
performs a wide range of wind instruments: in addition to the Persian nay, the Japanese shakuhachi,
and the Native American Navajo flute, he has
concertized and recorded with the Irish whistle, bagpipes, the Western
classical flute, and the
didjeridu. Drawing on backgrounds in classical, folk, and ethnic
musics, he has created and recorded
compositions which incorporate these instruments with glass harmonica,
voice, keyboards, and
percussion.
Mr
Kauffman has appeared at the New York Open Center and at the
Cathedral of St. John the
Divine; he has collaborated with David Darling and Paul Horn, and his
recordings include Tom
Chapin’s Grammy-nominated disc Around the World and Back Again, as well
as Ryuichi Sakamoto’s
opera Life. Mr Kauffman was recently seen on the 1999 MTV Music Video
Awards.
