Matthew Cody conducts
Sospeso for the Sospeso Cabaret
program on April 16, 2005 at studioseven.
Mr. Cody
is an active New York-based conductor who is becoming well-known
for his affinity with contemporary music as well as his understanding
of innovative concert programming. He has conducted a number of
New York City's most eminent new music ensembles, including counter)induction,
Ensemble Sospeso, PRISM Players, Lost Dog New Musik, and the ensembles
of the Columbia University Graduate Composers. In 2004, he made
his first appearance with Da Capo Chamber Players, conducting the
world premiere of Chinary Ung’s Oracle. His passion for
new music has enabled him to work with many outstanding artists,
including sopranos Lucy Shelton and Elizabeth Farnum, violinist
Mark Menzies, and trombonist James Miller.
He remains true to his roots as a brass player, having recently
been named Principal Conductor of the Metro Trombone Ensemble in
Brooklyn. He is also a member of the tenor section of the Riverside
Choral Society.
Before
relocating to New York City, he lived for ten years in Los Angeles,
where he founded The Lontano Music Group, a cutting-edge ensemble
that illuminated lesser known repertory and music of composers living
and working in California. The Los Angeles Times praised
the ensemble’s programs as "provocative and engaging,” and remarked
that Mr. Cody conducted “with brio” and that his “leadership…brought
the scores into focus.” Mr. Cody began his musical studies at UCLA
as a trumpet player under the tutelage of Donald Green, and later
studied conducting privately with Samuel Krachmalnick. He is currently
a student of Michael Morgan.
