The Canadian composer Howard Shore is probably best known for his work in
film. He has composed the scores for over fifty films, including The Silence of the Lambs and
Philadelphia, directed by Jonathan Demme; Ed Wood, directed by Tim
Burton; After Hours, directed by Martin Scorsese; and Seven and The
Game, directed by David Fincher.
Shore's long standing collaboration with David Cronenberg has produced the scores to
The Brood (1979), Scanners (1980), Videodrome (1983), The Fly (1986),
Dead Ringers (1988), Naked Lunch (1990), M. Butterfly (1993),
Crash (1996) and eXistenZ (1999).
Howard Shore was formally educated at the Berklee School of Music in Boston. He recorded with the group "Lighthouse" from 1969-1972. As one of the original creators of
Saturday Night Life, Howard Shore served as Musical Director from 1975-1980.
He has been honored with a Los Angeles Film Critics Award, a Grammy Award nomination, and a BAFTA Award nomination in Great Britain. Shore has also received a Gotham Award in New York, the Saturn Award for Science Fiction and a Genie Award in Canada.
In November 1996, Mr. Shore was honored at the Seville Film Music Festival where he conducted the Seville Symphony Orchestra in a live performance of his music. In January 1998, he conducted a performance of Crash at the National Arts Center in Ottawa. In Melbourne, Australia, Mr. Shore conducted a performance of
Crash at Cinesonic's 1st International Conference on Film Scores and Sound Design. In May 2000, Mr. Shore was honored during a week long retrospective of his work presented by the University of Ghent in Belgium.

Real Music: The Secret Lives of Film Composers.
Howard Shore's most recent film scores include David Cronenberg's futuristic thriller
eXistenZ (his ninth collaboration with Cronenberg) and Dogma from writer-director Kevin Smith. His upcoming films include
The Yards, from director James Gray, and the French production, Esther
Kahn, directed by Arnaud Desplechin.
