Sospeso performs music by Jaurés Lamarque Pons on the American Voices concert at the Americas Society Fortieth Anniversary Celebration on November 9, 2005.

A pianist, composer, and author, Pons was born in Salto in 1917. After early studies in piano and violin, he moved to Montevideo in 1935 to study piano with Guillermo Kolischer, harmony with Tomas Mujica and composition with Guido Santorsola and Enrique Casal Chapi.

For years, he played piano at several cabarets and restaurants in the Uruguayan capital, which brought him very close to its popular music, a familiarity that continued with his work as pianist in radio and television. He was a strong proponent of a nationalistic musical style through his own compositions, conferences, and publications. In addition to piano pieces, he composed chamber and orchestral works and operas.

He died in Montevideo in 1982.
