The Ensemble Sospeso’s tribute concert to Pierre Boulez, in celebration of his eightieth birthday, brings a diverse group of composers from France, Europe, and America to applaud the career and music of one of the consistently fascinating musicians of our time. These works of tribute—by Bruno Mantovani, DJ Spooky, Brian Ferneyhough, John Zorn, Thurston Moore, Marc-André Dalbavie, and others—will form a tributary around Boulez’s Mallarmé cycle, a fitting homage to the composer’s highly personal poetic world.

Mr. Boulez songs also form an homage to French poet Stéphane Mallarmé, one of his inspirations; the poetry will be read by a very special guest. Mr. Boulez himself will be on hand to rehearse with Sospeso and participate in a pre-concert discussion that will shed light on his music, his unique career, and the musical art in general.

This concert is the major retrospective of Boulez’s music in New York in the year of his eightieth anniversary.
