Pierre
Boulez, the
French
composer,
writer, and
conductor who
replaced
Leonard
Bernstein at
the head of
the New York
Philharmonic,
might need
little
introduction.
But his music
is due for a
reintroduction
to New
Yorkers that
have not
heard
performances
of four major chamber
works,
spanning thirty years, for
quite some
time.
During
his March
visit to New
York, Maestro
Boulez will
work with two
very
different
groups:
the Vienna
Philharmonic,
with whom he
will perform
Debussy,
Bruckner, and
Mahler at
Carnegie
Hall; and the
Ensemble
Sospeso, with
whom he will
rehearse new
performances
of his music
including the
surreal
masterpiece
Le Marteau
sans Maître.
Maestro
Boulez will
participate
in a
midconcert
conversations,
and the
evening will
also feature
a poetry
reading by a
special
guest. This concert,
which marks
Sospeso's
Alice Tully
Hall debut,
is a
co-production
with the
Works &
Process
performance
series of New
York's
Guggenheim
Museum, produced by Mary Sharp Cronson.
