In a sense, American classical music of the twentieth century is indeed arcane; in another, it has opened itself to an astonishing diversity of cultural influences, sometimes bewilderingly so.  The Ensemble Sospeso headlines the final evening of Seattle’s annual Tone Whole Festival, a weeklong series of performances of experimental jazz, rock, and classical music, showing that amerarcana—‘bitter Americana’—is better translated as ‘bittersweet.’  This program celebrates the independent American composer, from a new experimental rock work by John Fitz-Rogers to one of Steve Reich’s most brilliant minimalist conceptions:  Electric Counterpoint, for electric guitar and tape.
